Dr Doom, Some Turtles & A Box Of Crap (Dr Doom, TMNT)

So today I did something I'm not too proud of, I bought a Marvel figure. I know, I know, no big deal, most toy collectors do it, but you see, I'm not into Marvel. Or DC. Superheroes in general just don't do it for me, which yes I realize makes me a very strange toy collector. But today at the Market Bazaar, I spent $10 on a mint on card Dr Doom from the early 90s. I had it when I was a kid, I remember getting him from the clearance toy store that moved into town for a short while. I wasn't into superheroes even back then but this guy just looked so cool, especially on the packaging. I sold him off along with all my other superheroes, and this was one of the few I regretted getting rid of. So when I saw Bobby had him for only $10, I was half hoping he'd be gone by the time I got there just so I wouldn't be tempted to buy him. But he didn't sell, he tempted me, and I caved. And god that packaging is a work of art, I see why I wanted it as a kid, and then again as an adult.

Dr Doom was the only figure I picked up today, but a few days ago I got a $10 box of mystery toys from Goodwill, mainly because I could see a couple vintage TMNT figures on top. Well, sort of, so one of them was actually in a different box, but I plucked him out and stuck him in here because he was mixed in with a bunch of dolls and this box looked slightly more promising. It really wasn't, but at least I got a couple good figures out of it.

I think the only two really noteworthy pieces were the reasons I bought the overpriced box in the first place, Robotic Bebop and Scumbug. Neither are in the best condition, Scumbug's missing his jaw and Bebop's pretty beat up. I didn't have either of these as a kid, and Robotic Bebop is one of the later figures and fairly rare, so I couldn't pass up a chance to add him to my collection. Were they essentially worth $5 a piece? No, not really, but some of the other stuff in this box more than paid for them.

The only other pieces I ended up keeping were an Imaginext ankylosaurus, because he's my favorite dinosaur, and a movie Michelangelo from the new TMNT movies. I did manage to make my money back and then some by selling a Toy Story figure, a whale, a little Fortnite figure and a velociraptor, bringing in about double what I paid for the whole box. By no means a big money maker but at least it means I essentially got my Turtles figures for free. I really need to stop buying these boxes of junk, there are rarely ever any treasures in them, other than the one piece that convinces me to buy it in the first place. I miss the old days when they threw toys in a bucket and you only bought the ones you wanted. Ah well, at least they're fun to sort through, never knos what you're gonna get. And now I'm wondering what's in the box I plucked Bebop out of, what if that one was better?

Toy Hunting in the White Mountains (Lord Zedd, Soundwave,TMNT, Go-Bots, MOTU)

While in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, celebrating my wife's birthday and working on my off-trail waterfall book series, I made a few discoveries I hadn't set out to find, in the form of toys. After dipping my feet in an ice cold stream for some waterfall pictures, we made our way to the Gorham Walmart so I could limp all the way to the back and check out the toy department. I swear I am an adult, despite the fact that every store we go to, the first place I head is toys. And then I get mad if they have the nerve not to have a toy section.

To my surprise, they had the Power Rangers Lightning Collection, they're usually a few months behind there, even more so than Bangor. But they must have just put it out because they had a full case, including my man Lord Zedd. Yes, I just bought him a couple days ago but I grabbed another one, either for display or to resell, haven't decided yet. I might just keep this one and return the one I bought in Bangor because his package was a little scuffed up.

And a few steps down the aisle, the brand new Transformers Siege War For Cybertron Soundwave figure. If you ask me, $30 is a little steep for this scale but he looks so dope, I knew I was getting him the second I saw the prototype images. Add to that the fact that his packaging is beautiful and he'll go perfectly next to Megatron.

A couple days later, I was browsing the antique shops in Littleton NH, looking for old maps and postcards, which I did find a few I just had to have, when I stumbled upon something I wasn't expecting. On the basement level of the Purple Peacock, there was a table full of comic books and jigsaw puzzles. I could tell immediately by the colors of the boxes, there was something good in there. You know that feeling, like a Spidey sense tingling? You just know.

Masters Of The Universe, I snatched that up so fast I might have left burn marks on it. Nope, looks like we're okay, no burns. Battle Armor He-Man and Man-At-Arms fighting Faker, Whiplash, Mer Man and Skeletor, hell freakin' yeah! I also spotted a Ninja Turtles puzzle with my favorite, Shredder, and Krang as they watch Raphael fight a Foot Soldier. I'll buy Shredder merchandise any day, which reminds me, whatever happened to my Shredder watch? And then, Go-Bots! How often do you see Go-Bots anything? And one of my all time favorites, Cop-Tur, in both robot and helicopter form. Yes, someone actually likes the Go-Bots.

I grabbed them all for $8 a piece. Not exactly a great deal but how often do you see these? Had they been a little cheaper, I probably would have picked up a second TMNT and Go-Bots puzzle, neither of which had my favorite characters on them.

The Hunt Continues... (Shredder, Jannetty, Styles, Lord Zedd)

The toy hunt continues. For the past two months I've been out of action with a herniated disc which caused sciatica. I'm finally up and moving around again after a long and painful two months. Yes, that means I missed the Bangor and Bar Harbor Comic Cons as well as the ToyFest show at the Portland mall. I can finally walk and sit and drive and just stand in general so I'm back on the hunt for toys.

My first stop of the day brought me to Salvation Army where I picked up a TMNT Talkin' Shredder figure from the 2012 line. He still talks, in fact he won't shut up, every time I touch him he's threatening me and he's the Shredder so I'm a little intimidated. I really dislike these newer turtles lines, I don't understand how they can be less detailed than the originals, but I love the Shredder design here and he was always my favorite. I wanted this figure back when he first came out but I couldn't afford to spend money on toys at the time so I'm glad to finally add him to the collection, and for only a dollar, you can't beat that.

And for the first time in two months, I finally made it back to the Bangor Market Bazaar to see what my buddies Mike and Bobby had going on at Northeast Collectibles. Sounds like I didn't miss much at the Bangor and Bar Harbor Comic Cons, Northeast Collectibles was the only toy dealer at either show. I would have been severely disappointed because I was expecting multiple dealers, Maine really needs to step its game up. After talking some business, I picked up a couple figures from the $5 wrestling bin.

I grabbed the Jakks Classic series Marty Jannetty which I'd had my eye on since I first came across him int he bucket but he was extremely dirty so I kept passing. I don't know what these kids do to their wrestling figures but mine never looked like that, I mean poor Jannetty looked like Shredder literally scared the s**t out of him. I've been wanting that figure since it came out back in 2005 as part of the Walmart exclusive 3 pack with Jim The Anvil Neidhart and Tito Santana. And after a little bath and scrubbing with the magic eraser, he's looking fresh and clean, except his boots which are still a little grungy.

I also grabbed an AJ Styles from his early TNA days. I always wanted a Styles from Toybiz's TNA line that from 2005 through 2007 but never actually saw one in the store at the time. To be honest, I didn't even know this version existed and can't figure out when this repaint was released. I've seen him on eBay before and loved the green and black trunks but had no idea he had an action feature, I guess the earlier figures in the line had them. A lever on his back moves his arms up and down, I don't remember any of the later TNA figures having action features. His joints are all a bit loose, common with Toybiz figures, but I managed to stand him up without much trouble and I finally have a Toybiz TNA AJ Styles to add to my collection.

Next stop of the day was Walmart, never a good idea on a Saturday afternoon. Since being back on my feet, I've been checking Walmart and Target every chance I get for the new 6" Power Rangers line. Today I figured I was one step closer because they had the empty pegs for them with the little out of stock sticker, those weren't there a couple days ago. Now, I've seen this before and found the box of figures int he top stock right above their pegs so I decided to look up and boom, 6" Lightning Collection Power Rangers. I grabbed the box down and opened it up and there he was, the short packed Lord Zedd.

Now, I was never a fan of the Power Rangers but my friends watched it so I was familiar. The bad guys were almost kinda cool but for the first season, the pink ranger Kimberly was about the only part of the show I liked. And then season 2 hit with a new bad guy leader, Lord Zedd. I don't know what his skin is or what happened to it but man this dude looks bad ass. I recently got the vintage figure I'd wanted back in 1995 but was secretly hoping for an updated version, and then I found out he was on his way. And now he's part of my collection. The package is a little damaged, it amazes me how Walmart manages to damage nearly all their figures when they're still in their sealed case, how is his package scuffed up and scratched? Luckily I'm not a mint collector kind of guy, I just want to own it, and now I do. And it turns out my girl Kimberly is slated for series 2, can't wait.

My Masters Of The Universe 200x & Vintage Custom Figures

From 2006 to 2008, I started creating my own collection of Masters Of The Universe custom figures, mostly in the 200x line, but I did start work on some vintage figures as well. Most of the figures aren't quite complete but I figured I'd share them anyway.

MOTU 200x Batros

Although he never appeared in the 200x show, and only once in the original series, he was one of my favorite characters. This was one of my first custom figures ever and is basically a Skeletor repaint with a sculpted head and chest plate. I went back and did some touch up work on him but never fully finished.

MOTU 200x Count Marzo

I'm still mad the 200x line ended, the cartoon, the action figures, hands down this was my favorite of all time. And although he appeared in multiple episodes of the 200x and original series, we didn't get a Marzo figure. As one of my earliest customs, I planned on going back and resculpting his chest plate with more detail as well as adding onto his loin cloth.

MOTU 200x Faker

I had to have Faker, I just couldn't afford Faker as he was a con exclusive. I added some paint detailing that wasn't on the actual figure and for a simple repaint, he came out quite well. Of course this was my first custom because that's how we all get into it, you start with a repaint. Now I have the real thing so this figure isn't exactly necessary and I'd probably reuse him if I ever get back into customizing.

MOTU 200x Goat Man

He didn't have a figure in the original series, or the 200x line. He didn't appear on screen at any point in time. He wasn't even in the comics. He appeared one time in a children's book as one of Beast Man's henchmen, and he looked like a total badass. I sculpted his head and chestplate but should have also sculpted the the design on it and shown some of his stomach like in his lone appearance.

MOTU 200x Icer

He appeared once in the original series as a one-off villain, but man was he awesome. He never got a chance to show up in the 200x cartoon or figures but if he did, there's no doubt it would have been epic. It felt like they made Ice Armor He-Man just to have a sculpt for Icer, turns out it was for Fisto. I sculpted the fur hood but never got around to finishing this piece.

MOTU 200x King Randor (incomplete)

Now if Ice Armor He-Man was made to have a Fisto mold, Battle Sound He-Man was made to give us the King Randor we sadly never got. I sculpted the armor on his leg as well as his beard but never got around to finishing the king. This one figure goes to show how much we missed out on by the early demise of this phenomenal series.

MOTU 200x Moss Man

Like Faker, I needed a Moss Man, but couldn't afford his con exclusive. So I did the simple repaint just like the official exclusive figure, well, minus the flocking. But now that I own the real thing, I've been wanting to go back and make him cartoon accurate with a friendly face and vines wrapping around him. If only I could give him a talking figure feature, I loved his McConaughey accent.

MOTU 200x Ninjor (incomplete)

Unfortunately I didn't get very far on this one. Ninjor never made it into the 200x line or cartoon but you just knew he was coming, and I couldn't wait. But sadly, he never did. So I had to make my own. I sculpted the hair and would have made a hood and vest but as one of my last ever customs, I never got that far. Ninjor was one of the coolest figures ever and we deserve a 200x version.

MOTU 200x Saurod

Hands down, one of the coolest Masters characters. He unfortunately didn't get a 200x figure or so much as an appearance but we can dream. Until they, fingers crossed, continue the line like they're doing with the vintage series, I'll have to live with this one. I sculpted his left leg, wristband, helmet and tail.

MOTU 200x Spikor

I'm still mad they never got around to putting Spikor in the 200x line, or even the stactions that came afterwards. He would have been amazing. This one came out, well, kind of plain but I sculpted his body armor and head spikes. I decided to leave his arm rather than turn it into his trident weapon but planned on making one for him to hold.

MOTU 200x Stinkor

The original Stinkor used Mekaneck's armor so I used Mekaneck's body for this one, and a vintage Stinkor head. I should have sanded down the mechanical arms and legs to make him look more like he did in the 200x cartoon and sculpted an original head. How did we not get a 200x figure? If I get back to customizing, I'll make him look more like his cartoon accurate staction figure.

MOTU 200x Strongarm

He appeared only one time, but I think it's safe to say we all wanted to see more of him. We finally got him in the Classics line but I needed him in the vintage and 200x lines as well. Although never completed, I sculpted his head and part of his chest plate, attached Man-At-Arms' fur loincloth and added a large Mega Punch He-Man fist to his robotic arm.

MOTU 200x Scareglow (incomplete)

One of my favorites since the first time I saw him back in 1987, I knew when the 200x line ended and we didn't have a Scareglow that I'd have to make one. I didn't get very far into the project other than a sculpted head and some paint. I would have trimmed down his waist armor and painted his glow in the dark bones but I want a damn staction or official 200x figure. At least we got a phenomenal Classics and even a Mega Construx on the way.

MOTU Vintage Cringer

Sure, you can take off Battle Cat's armor and pretend he's Cringer, but it's just not the same. As a kid, I never understood why we didn't get a Cringer, with his friendly feline face and pre-Battle Cat body. I never fully completed this custom but he's close enough to get a good idea of what he would have looked like.

MOTU Vintage Goat Man

We never got a Goat Man in the original line because he only appeared once and that was in a Golden Book. We finally got him in the Classics line but long before that figure ever existed, I made him in the 200x and vintage style, though I never quite finished him. I sculpted his body armor and head but I'm hoping we get him in the retro vintage line sooner or later.

MOTU Vintage Hordak

Long before we got the retro styled cartoon accurate Hordak, I decided to make my own. I never understood why his toy was gray but he was blue in the cartoon and always wanted to fix that. Just a simple repaint I never completed but he was coming out pretty good. I never got around to painting his armor and now that we have the official retro version, my incomplete custom doesn't need to be completed.

MOTU Vintage Icer

He appeared only one time in the vintage cartoon but he made a lasting impression, at least on me. As my very first time sculpting a head, it came out a little less detailed than I would have liked but the clay I was using at the time was pretty hard to work with. It did give him a slightly squishy head like many of the vintage MOTU figures had.

MOTU Vintage Lodar

He appeared in one mini-comic fairly early in the series so we never got a figure or even a cartoon appearance. You could tell by looking at him on the cover of the Slave City mini-comic that he was one bad one. I sculpted his head, chestplate and shoulderpads but never finished the Mortal Kombat looking character.

MOTU Vintage Strongarm (incomplete)

Intended to be a recurring character in the 80s cartoon, he was replaced by Jitsu, who we did get a figure for. But Strongarm was forgotten. I sculpted a head for the figure but it came out pretty bad and broke before I could fix it so he remains headless until I get back to customizing. He would have made for a great figure, it's a shame we couldn't get both him and Jitsu.

My WWF Hasbro Custom Figures

Between 2006 and 2008, I made tons of custom figures, mostly Masters Of The Universe and WWF Hasbros. Some came out pretty good, some, not so much. But I was turning them out three or four at a time. I hope to get back to it someday when I have the time, most of these will get reworked. I have a list a mile long of figures I planned on making, broken down into separate series by year and card color. I started designing the cardbacks as well, I'll post those when I find the files.

WWF Hasbro - Shawn Michaels (prototpye)

Based on the prototype figure that was shown in the iconic Undertake Em All ad in the WWF magazine in the early 90s. I fantasized about having that figure and when he came out, he had a different body. If I find the time, I'll go back at some point and repaint his red spots in their accurate locations.

WWF Hasbro - Macho Man Randy Savage

It would have been impossible to cover all of Macho Man's signature outfits, but with four figures, you'd expect a little more diversity. I always wanted one with no shades, and wearing a full bodysuit instead of his trunks. Macho Man #4 came close but he was wearing a coat so he was no good to play with.

WWF Hasbro - King Mabel

The line ended before the infamous orange card series was released, which would have given us Men On A Mission. Long before the prototype artwork was leaked online, I figured they would have used the regular big man body type, but I went in a slightly different direction.

WWF Hasbro - Triple H

Most of the custom Hasbros I made were to complete the series, but I also started getting into current superstars (current back then). Pictures don't do it justice but this one came out amazing, from the sculpted beard and elbow pads to the sanded down hair and boots.

WWF Hasbro - Mankind

Of course we finally got Mankind in the second series of WWE Retros, but long before then, I turned a Hacksaw into Mankind. I'm still kinda mad the Retro had the white shirt instead of his original attire. I really wanted to use a Nasty Boy Jerry Saggs figure, but he's a little harder to come by.

WWF Hasbro - Stone Cold Steve Austin

Again, we got him in the second series of WWE Retros, and he was awesome, but where was his vest? It's funny that they used the same basic figure sculpt that I used for mine ten years earlier. I still can't believe I deconstructed a Razor Ramon for this one.

WWF Hasbro - Kane

Sticking with the theme here, another figure released in series 2 of the Retros, Kane. This was one of my very first customs and first time sculpting with his mask. I must say, the Retro version of Kane is phenomenal and I wouldn't even display mine next to him, if I had him out of package to display that is. Still searching.

WWF Hasbro - Adam Bomb

When I first saw the green card series in a WWF magazine article, I think I got my first erection. Or maybe that was from Sunny. But I never so much as saw any one of those green card figures in person. I now own Adam Bomb but before I had him, I made his final WWF outfit when he turned face. So no, don't worry, that is not an Adam Bomb figure under the paint job.

WWF Hasbro - Kama

He may not have been the best in the ring, but man did he look cool. I always wanted his action figure but we never got this version of The Supreme Fighting Machine in any line of WWF figures. I kind of regret doing this to a Papa Shango figure now, he wasn't worth quite as much then.

 

WWF Hasbro - Lex Luger

At the time, there was speculation Lex Luger in his american gear would have been included in the orange card series which I would have loved to own. Call me crazy but I liked Lex, so I had to make him in his american ring gear. A simple repaint but lots of detail make this a really professional looking figure.

WWF Hasbro - Henry O Godwin

This was probably one of my most heavily customized figures, using two different bodies and tons of sculpting. It came out looking a little rough and I should have sculpted the pockets on his overalls but his hat and hair came out great. Always hated the HOG but I would have loved to have his Hasbro back then.

WWF Hasbro - Sgt Slaughter

And here's the other two halves of the Henry Godwin figure, making up Sgt Slaughter's final ring attire back when he was teaming with Hacksaw Jim Duggan. I loved the original Sarge Hasbro figure but was confused because he no longer wore that outfit. It took a lot longer to produce figures back then.

WWF Hasbro - Aldo 'Man O War' Montoya

He was ridiculously corny and short lived, so he never got a figure, but Aldo Montoya would have fit in perfectly in the Hasbro line. His jock strap looking mask came out a little rough and should have been a bit smaller but overall, a pretty cool figure.

WWF Hasbro - Justin Hawk Bradshaw

He went on to be just Bradshaw of the Acolytes, then JBL, but his first gimmick was a cowboy. Had Hasbro kept making WWF figures, still mad at them for losing the contract, we surely would have gotten this forgettable character. His sculpted vest and chest are a little lumpy but other than that, not a bad figure.

WWF Hasbro - Damian Demento

He wasn't with the company long enough to get his own figure which is a shame. He was crazy and entertaining as hell and he'll be forever remembered for losing to the Undertaker on the very first Raw. I planned on making his entrance gear but unfortunately never got around to it. Pretty sure I still have the piece I planned on using.

WWF Hasbro - Jean Pierre Lafitte

He looks like a pirate because he is. This gimmick would have made an amazing Hasbro figure, they didn't really make many bad ones. His mesh top took hours to paint but came out pretty good. I also sculpted his headband, hair and bandana as that was once the Berzerker with his helmet.

WWF Hasbro - NWO Hollywood Hulk Hogan

I had a few bear hug Hogans sitting around and figured, why not? Just a simple repaint and a sculpted bandana but he came out pretty good, this was an earlier custom and one of my first times doing small writing.

WWF Hasbro - Dean Douglas

He came in a little late in the New Generation era to get a Hasbro figure but had they not lost the license, we surely would have gotten Shane Douglas as the Dean. Just a repaint with a detailed crest. I wasn't good enough to sculpt his face unfortunately so he looks suspiciously like Rick Martel dressed  in Dean Douglas ring gear.

WWF Hasbro - Paul Bearer

And this is why I didn't sculpt any other faces. I started to get better later on and would have tried the Deadman's manager again eventually. I would have sculpted the tie and mustache rather than paint them on and maybe touched up the flower a bit as well. Man this one is bad.

WWF Hasbro - Vader

As just a basic repaint, it's a shame Hasbro didn't continue the line, Vader would have been a simple head sculpt. I used Bam Bam Bigelow and didn't even have to do any head swapping. Vader never had quite the impact in WWF as he did in WCW but when he first came in, he was a beast.

WWF Hasbro - Bastion Booger

I know, I know, I should have used the big man body for the overly obese Bastion Booger, a figure we would have gotten in the orange card series. But the Demolition figures had the same S&M looking strappy thing and it was too perfect to pass up. If I ever redo him, I'll put him on the right body. We'll call mine the Slim Fast Bastion Booger and he'll come with a treadmill.

WWF Hasbro - Savio Vega

Again, he came in a little late in the game to be immortalized in Hasbro plastic. He never made much of an impact but I was on a mission to make every New Generation superstar there was. Simple repaint with a sanded down head sculpt rather than using clay to build it up. I also sanded down the Sgt Slaughter pointed finger.

WWF Hasbro - purple Undertaker

In the second assortment of the rumored Orange Card Series, we would have gotten a purple Undertaker with no hat. He would have had a new head sculpt as well but as my first Hasbro custom, I kept it as simple as possible and just sanded off his hat and added his missing tattoos. We finally got him in Retro series 1 but he still had the hat.

WWF Hasbro - Hunter Hearst Helmsley

I hated this figure before I even started it. I knew the boring outfit would be way too plain for a custom. I sanded down the face and sculpted the hair into a ponytail but it looked nothing like Hunter. We got him, sort of, in Retro series 2 but it was Triple H and not Mr Helmsley, and he had the stupid jumping action, still better than mine.

WWF Hasbro - Hakushi (incomplete)

One of the coolest characters to come out of the New Generation. His body ink, his theme song, his in-ring style. WWF just had no clue what to do with him, and probably wouldn't have known what to do with his figure. All those symbols up and down his body took forever, they probably would have left those out like Undertaker's tattoos. He still needs some more body art and clay on the sides of his head.

WWF Hasbro - Blake Beverly (incomplete)

Back in the early days of the line, we almost got a Beverly Brothers tag team pack. But for some reason, never did. I have a feeling they would have been in the third set which never happened, and then they left the company before their singles versions were ever put in production. I stopped partway through sculpting his head.

WWF Hasbro - Razor Ramon (incomplete)

The Razor Ramon figure was always one of my favorites, and not just because Razor was. I still love that figure, despite the fact that I don't think Razor ever wore that specific color combination. One problem, he couldn't do the Razor's Edge. Problem solved. Plus I gave him his actual red ring gear. But I never quite finished the figure.

WWF Hasbro - Brutus Beefcake (incomplete)

The Barber left the company before his Mega Maniacs variant was released in series 9. Pretty sure no one cared but I made the figure anyway, before I even knew he was slated for the line. I used his version #1 mold though and sculpted the protective mask he wore, it looks like Hasbro was not going to do the mask. Sculpted it, but never painted it.

WWF Hasbro - Jimmy Hart (incomplete)

The Hasbro line never saw the inclusion of managers, which means we missed out on a lot of cool figures. Jimmy Hart would have been awesome in any one of his crazy outfits. Unfortunately, my incomplete DiBiase repaint looks like the Million Dollar Man bought the Mouth Of The South's  jacket. 

WWF Hasbro - Ted DiBiase (incomplete)

There he is, back in his own million dollar jacket. I did this repaint for a friend who was a big DiBiase fan but never quite finished his silver suit. Easily one of the worst action moves of all time, only topped by the stupid jumpers. Let's just hope this move doesn't find its way into the Retro line like the jumpers did.

WWF Hasbro - The Barbarian (incomplete)

Rumor has it, he was slated for the original series 2, but by the time they got around to making it, all those wrestlers were gone from the company. So we never got a Barbarian despite getting a Warlord, awesome figure by the way. So with a head swap and lots of sculpting, I started my own Barbarian but never got around to finishing him.

WWF Hasbro - Tugboat (incomplete)

And another one from that rumored series 2 set of figures. By the time the second series was released, Tugboat became Typhoon and saw his modified figure come out in series 3. He should have a Big Bossman lower half and a Typhoon upper half it turns out, but I didn't know that at the time, and I figured a broken Akeem would work just fine.

WWF Hasbros (incomplete in early stages)

Jake The Snake Roberts in his 1996 return to the ring gear, he would have had a shirt.
